As part of the Rochester Institute of Technology, the Printing Applications Laboratory (PAL) is in a unique position to excel. RIT has been synonymous with excellence in the printing industry for decades, and it has the internal organizations to show for it.
Printing Industry Center at RIT
The RIT Printing Industry Center, charged with the mission of addressing the concerns of the printing industry, keeps a finger on the pulse of print developments like no other organization can. Industry Partners work with Center researchers to pinpoint areas of concern, and then evaluate the studies that result. This give-and-take keeps the Printing Industry Center at the forefront of the latest trends and technological advances in the industry. PAL can draw on the Center's research and expertise in its work with clients.
RIT School of Print Media
At the School of Print Media (SPM), located in RIT's College of Imaging Arts and Sciences, students learn to take an integrated view of the print manufacturing process. SPM offers degree programs in print media, graphic media, and new media publishing, with available concentrations in a host of special interest areas. By senior year, students can be involved in all aspects of designing, planning, managing, and producing complete projects on behalf of real clients with deadlines, budgets and clearly defined goals. Many of these projects involve the planning and production of printed publications which the students carry out in PAL's state-of-the-industry equipped facilities. SPM's renowned faculty is available to PAL for advice and consulting, and some of the best SPM students work part-time or as co-ops for PAL.
RIT Industry Education Programs
RIT's Industry Education Programs (IEP) help organizations identify educational needs, and train employees in a wide range of topics, from the basic orientation that a new hire will need, to, for example, the very specific information that a forensic document examiner will use on the job. This kind of aggressive educational outreach can enable PAL's clients to train and update their employees.
University Expertise
PAL leverages specific expertise from across the university in areas such as imaging and color science, engineering, packaging, and materials science to provide a world-class platform for advanced studies of primary relevance today.
